MUSIC
Curriculum Lead: Mrs P. Mallinder
Intent
At St Mary and St Michael Primary School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical opportunities, through which we aim to build up their confidence in all aspects of personal and academic development.
Implementation
Here at SSMM, music is taught using the Sing Up scheme of work. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different styles of music. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms.
Impact
At the end of the year we expect the children to have achieved ARE for their year group. Some children will have been inspired, and therefore develop a passion to take their own learning in music further. We offer opportunities for the children to build on this through a rich programme of extra-curricular activities and individual music tuition. This also provides the opportunity to raise the profile of our school in the wider community of Garstang.
Progression of Skills and Knowledge
We use the Sing Up scheme of work for the Progression of Skills and Knowledge through the Music Curriculum. We adapt this as necessary to meet the needs of our pupils
