PE and Sport
At SS Mary and Michael Catholic Primary School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with fun, high quality PE and sport provision.
We aim to provide children with the skills and confidence to take part in a wide range of physical activity and sport, as well as developing their knowledge of how to lead a happy, healthy lifestyle. This begins right at the start of their school journey, where we strive to provide opportunities for our children to learn and develop key, fundamental movement skills and the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle.
Once these skills are learnt, our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other engaging activities that build their own character and embed values such as teamwork, resilience and the drive to achieve their own, unique goals.
Extra curricular sporting activities take place on a weekly basis. School teams are entered in local community competitions.
Through a variety of sporting actvivities, our aims are to promote a sense of fair play, competitiveness, co-operation and good sportsmanship. Allied to these we also seek to develop self-confidence, stamina, physical skills and appropriate attitudes & responses. The following are the sports played at School: football, tag rugby, hockey, quick cricket, netball, basketball, rounders, swimming and athletics. We also seek to provide our children with experiences in new and current sports such as dodgeball and handball.

SSMM introduces 'Blacklight Handball'
Each week DJ Danny coaches and helps us to enjoy developing skills such as passing and receiving the ball, moving into space, aiming at various targets and developing our tactical knowledge of the game... and we do all of this to music and with the UV Disco lights!!!
These unique sessions provide a motivating, dynamic and positive environment for all of our children!
Throughout the year our children have access to a range of multi-sport after school clubs that are planned and led by professional coaches. So far the children have developed specific skills in tag rugby, basketball, hockey and cricket. We are really looking forward to our football activities in the summer term!
Congratulations to our Year 3 & 4 children who went to GCA and took part in a Basketball competition. We have celebrated National PE and Sports Week for some years now. Last year, we celebrated the 'Euros 2016' along with the 'Olympics and Paralympics', in Rio in the summer. This year we have teamed up with the Youth Sports Trust and taken the theme of 'PJ Masks and Sporting Superheros' and celebrated 2017 PE and Sports week as SSMM Superheroes!
Our children already have regular high quality PE sessions and many wider opportunities in sport to include dance, rugby, football, martial arts to name but a few. PE and Sports week sees a themed week where children can experience a variety of activities perhaps new sports and games and simply have some fun, both outdoors and in the classroom! Some of the activities experienced by the children can be seen in the photos below. The week included; a super food and healthy eating station, safer cycling, goal ball, wheelchair basketball, a visit from paralympic swimmer Stephanie Slater, daily wake and shake sessions, Hummingbirds Mini Olympics, exercise advice with a physiotherapist, 'bring a ball to school day' and a special celebration assembly with DJ Danny!
