National P.E. & Sports Week 2010

With the world seemingly sporting crazy, with the world cup and Wimbledon in full swing, SS Mary Michael Catholic Primary School, Garstang have been rising to the challenge of promoting sport and healthy living in their own special ways.

In support of 'National PE and Sports Week', children at the school enjoyed a whole week of activities based around sporting themes.

During the week, pupils took part in activities ranging from team sports to board games, and one class had the opportunity to interview an athlete about his preparation for marathon running. Even the Hummingbirds Pre-School group have taken part in their Mini Olympics, which is organised by the older Year 5 pupils. Professional sports coaches also visited the school, leading sessions on sports not normally available to the primary children such as TAG rugby.

Each day started with a 'wake and shake' session led by the Headteacher in the playground, as children arrived for school, when even parents were encouraged to join in. Headteacher Cathryn Wilkinson added 'We want to encourage our children to be healthy and happy in school which is why we always encourage a range of diverse opportunities beyond the standard curriculum.'

The weeklong celebration of sport culminated in a dedicated sports assembly at which children were allowed to wear the kit of their chosen sport or pastime, which ranged from footballers to ballet dancers and horse riders. Representatives of local sporting agencies were also invited to the assembly.

The school also announced their success in their application to the Football Foundation's Goalpost Safety Scheme. The foundation is keen to introduce safer goal posts as since 1991 nine young footballers have tragically been killed in the UK by unsafe goals. Many more have been seriously injured by posts and crossbars that fail to meet even basic safety standards. Teaming up with The FA, the Football Foundation has earmarked almost £4m to match-fund the installation of new goals at thousands of schools, clubs and parks across the country. Cathryn Wilkinson said, 'We are delighted to be one of the successful schools and are keen to ensure the safety of children playing football on our pitch.'

Cathryn Wilkinson said, 'Our National PE and Sports Week has been a great success, not only have children of all ages been able to take part in new sporting activities but they have also learned about the benefits of sport to healthy living and developed their organisational skills during sports day events.'
